Welcome to the SNAC web site!
This site was written and created by Sheri Barke, MPH, RD and other
UCLA professionals to help college students eat well, be active, and
feel good about their bodies. Our goal is to help prevent nutrition-related
health problems (including eating disorders, disordered eating, overweight/obesity,
size prejudice, and poor nutrient intake) which threaten students'
academic and developmental success. The
media bombards us with ultra-thin and steroid-pumped body ideals
that are unrealistic for most people to achieve. In addition, we
are exposed to numerous diet books, fitness magazines, supplement
ads, and testimonials from friends and family that give us conflicting
information about what to eat and how to exercise. No wonder we
all get so confused and frustrated at times!
On this web site, you'll find images of REAL bodies
that reflect the diversity of body types on our campus. You'll see
how health and fitness come in all shapes and sizes. Each month,
check out "Bruins Aiming Toward Healthy Lifestyles" to
see profiles of REAL students, staff, and faculty who are striving
for balanced, healthy lives.
You'll also get accurate, up-to-date information
about food, nutrition, and fitness and learn how to deal with the
unique challenges that college students face to eating well, being
active, and feeling good about your body on campus.
We hope the SNAC web site will be a valuable resource
for you and your peers as you strive to balance school, work, and
responsibilities with health, fitness, and well-being.
Healthy regards,
SNAC (Student Nutrition & body image Action Committee)
